Jason, I would just like to say that this blog entry broke my heart. My dream for years has been to get beach braids. I just needed some affirmation, not my daughters' looks of horror when I suggested it. Now I can only think of the Langston Hughes poem, "Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams die/ Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly . . . .
I'm moved by your reference to the poetry of Langston Hughes, but beach braids are simply never okay. Perhaps you could modify your dreams by reading "Braids" by Li-Young Lee. The poem speaks of the intimacy of braiding and the experience shared by the braider and the braidee. It's an intimacy that falls short when you pay a local two dollars to make you look like Bo Derek in "Ten."
